This district, bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, is a gateway to some of Africa’s most unique attractions, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking an authentic and enriching experience. One of the district’s most iconic features is its proximity to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. The serene waters of Lake Kivu provide a picturesque backdrop for various activities, including boat tours, fishing, and exploring its charming islands such as Nkombo Island. Nkombo Island, in particular, is renowned for its distinctive cultural practices and vibrant community life, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditions of the local people.

Rusizi is also home to the majestic Nyungwe National Park, a crown jewel of East and Central Africa. This ancient rainforest is celebrated for its unparalleled biodiversity, boasting over 310 bird species, 13 species of primates including chimpanzees and a wealth of endemic flora. Activities such as the thrilling canopy walk, guided chimpanzee treks, and scenic hikes through lush trails make Nyungwe a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Additionally, the district’s tea plantations and rolling hills add to its scenic charm.

Cultural heritage is another highlight of Rusizi District. Visitors can engage with local communities to learn about traditional crafts, music, and dance in Nkombo Island, Islamic culture in Bugarama estate, as well as explore historical sites such as the MIBIRIZI Genocide Memorial, Nkanka Genocide Memorial site, Nkanka Earthquake Memorial, which stands as a poignant reminder of Rwanda’s history. Nkanka Sector, within Rusizi, stands out as a tourism destination with its distinctive attractions. Kinyaga Cell, rich in kingdom history, offers insights into the region’s past and its connection to Rwanda’s royal heritage. The Hepfo International Market serves as a vibrant hub for trade between Rwandans and Congolese from Birava, Binja and IDJWI Island as the biggest inland in lake KIVU on the part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, fostering cross-border cultural exchange.

Rugaraga Hill provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, making it a perfect spot for hiking and photography.

Nyabiranga Village, with its unique cultural belief that men are not born for cultivation or cattle rearing, adds an intriguing dimension to the area’s traditions. Rusizi District, with its blend of natural wonders and cultural richness in East and Central Africa, Rusizi exemplifies eco-tourism and sustainable travel. Amazing country, beautifully seen from the seat of a bicycle. So many unusual sights - friendly people (attractive, relaxed, smiling, shouting hello); fields of rice, coffee, rubber, eucalyptus, dragon fruit, etc., farmers herding brown cows and water buffalo; basic living conditions, cooking, eating and washing-up in the open, spilling out onto pavement; scooters everywhere and crazy driving but it seems to work, no road rage; great respect for older people and ancestors (colourful cemeteries and every house has small ancestral shrine). Came back with a real feel for the country, wanting to learn more.

Lifelong memories We were part of a group of 17 who quickly formed a close bond created entirely by the enthusiasm and generosity of our leader. Nothing was too much trouble Long went out of his way every day to make sure we experienced in full life in Vietnam. The trip ran like clockwork, without us feeling we were being rushed at any stage. He made it fun even when we cycled 100 k in a day taking in a very high mountain pass.
